A Message from the Director

The school has an essential and demanding mission: to train professionals responsible for safeguarding cultural heritage and collective memory, thereby promoting cultural identity. The training enables students to understand works of cultural heritage, their materials, and their histories, and to intervene ethically, respecting the traces of time that have shaped them, in order to preserve and transmit them to future generations.
Conservation and restoration play a crucial role in the preservation of cultural heritage. It is a discipline that combines science, art, and culture, and it requires knowledge, expertise, and know-how, as well as critical thinking. Currently, technological advancements are integrated into the curriculum to allow for optimal documentation and analysis of cultural assets. It is this multidisciplinary approach that we teach our students, who are destined to become future professionals committed to the protection of Algerian cultural heritage.

The National School of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage (ENSCRBC) is a public institution of higher education and research, under the joint supervision of the Ministries of Culture and Higher Education.

Our mission is to train the professionals who will be responsible for studying, preserving, and transmitting the nation's tangible heritage.

In a country with a history spanning millennia, where each era has left its mark, our mission is of paramount importance.

It is not simply a matter of restoring objects, but of breathing new life into a fragile memory, understanding our collective journey, and restoring, stone by stone, the link between a rich past and a demanding future.

Science, Mémoire et Avenir
Our Purpose

The ENSCRBC was founded on a simple observation: to confidently face the future, a people must know and understand its heritage. Our approach rests on three fundamental pillars:

  • Scientific Investigation:
    We teach our students the most advanced scientific methodologies for analyzing the materials that make up cultural property, diagnosing damage, and understanding ancient creation techniques. It is a rigorous process where science is placed at the service of history.

  • Preserving Memory:
    Every manuscript, every artifact, every work of art is a fragment of our shared narrative. By restoring them, we fight against oblivion and contribute to writing a material history of our heritage, which remains largely unknown.

  • Transmission to Future Generations:
    Our work is only meaningful if it is oriented towards the future. We train conservator-researchers whose mission will be to safeguard this heritage so that it can continue to educate and inspire future generations.

Educational purposes :
Training Heritage Guardians

Our training program, structured within the Bachelor’s-Master’s-Doctorate framework, aims to produce well-rounded experts. Upon completion of their studies, our graduates will have mastered:

  • In-depth knowledge of heritage sciences and the history of artistic techniques.
  • Investigation and analysis methods (material characterization, identification of pathologies) to establish a reliable scientific diagnosis.
  • The design and implementation of conservation-restoration projects that respect the integrity of the object.
  • The management and promotion of cultural heritage, including heritage legislation, inventory, and the use of specialized databases.

Career opportunities:
Expertise in the Service of the Nation

Curators and conservators trained at the ENSCRBC are expected to work throughout the national cultural sector and beyond:

  • National and Regional Museums

  • Office for the Management and Operation of Cultural Assets

  • Cultural Directorates of the Provinces

  • National Library

  • Institutions related to national memory (Museums of the Mujahideen, etc.)

  • Tourism and research sectors, as well as the specialized private sector.

In a field where much remains to be explored and documented, we provide the scientific tools and methodological rigor so that Algerian youth can actively participate in this great endeavor to rediscover our heritage.
